The Half-life of 130Te Double ^-decay

ثبت نشده
چکیده

In order to determine the half-life of the 130Te double /?-decay, the amounts and isotopic composition of xenon extracted from tellurium ores, from the Oya gold mine in Japan, have been measured with a high-sensitivity mass spectrometer. Compared with atmospheric xenon an excess was definitely found at mass numbers 129, 130 and 131 in the extracted xenon. The excess of 130Xe is predominant, the average amount in three samples being (1.32 ±0.09) x 1 0 1 1 ccSTP/g 130Te. Attributing the excess 130Xe to the double /?-decay of 130Te, the half-life is estimated to be (8.20 ± 0.64) x 1020 years, assuming an age of (9.06 ± 0.29) x 107 years for the Te ores. The latter value is the K-Ar age of porphyrite, which is in close geological connection with the Te ores. In order to investigate the other excesses than that of 130Xe, isotopic analyses were also carried out on Xe from three other Te ores from the same mine. The ratios (129Xe/131Xe) excess =1.58 and (129Xe/130Xe) excess= 2.1 were found to be the same for all samples. The origin of these excesses is discussed. In addition a small excess of 128Xe was found. If this is attributed to 128Te double /?-decay, the half-life of 128Te is estimated to be 3 x 1022 years, a value shorter by about three orders of magnitude than the theoretically expected half-life. The above estimated half-life may be a lower limit of the 128Te half-life. The general tendency of the isotopic abundances (except for the above excesses), of the xenon extracted from Te ores seems to be to slightly increase in excess as one moves toward the lighter isotopes (as compared with atmospheric xenon).

Average and recommended half-life values for two neutrino double beta decay: upgrade-09

All existing “positive” results on two neutrino double beta decay in different nuclei were analyzed. Using the procedure recommended by the Particle Data Group, weighted average values for half-lives of 48Ca, 76Ge, 82Se, 96Zr, 100Mo, 100Mo 100Ru (01 ), 116Cd, 130Te, 150Nd, 150Nd 150Sm (01 ) and 238U were obtained. Existing geochemical data were analyzed and recommended values for half-lives of ...

Neutrinoless double beta decay search with SNO+

The SNO+ experiment is the follow up of SNO. The detector is located 2 km underground in the Vale Canada Ltd.’s Creighton Mine near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. The active volume of the detector consists of 780 tonnes of Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB) in an acrylic vessel of 12 m diameter, surrounded by about 9500 PMTs. The main goal of the SNO+ experiment is the search for neutrinoless double beta de...

Large - scale calculations of the double - β decay of 76 Ge , 130 Te , 136 Xe , and 150 Nd in the deformed self - consistent Skyrme quasiparticle random - phase approximation

We use the axially deformed Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) together with the SkM∗ energy-density functional, both as originally presented and with the time-odd part adjusted to reproduce the Gamow-Teller resonance energy in 208Pb, to calculate the matrix elements that govern the neutrinoless double-β decay of 76Ge, 130Te, 136Xe, and 150Nd. Our matrix elements in 130Te an...

The CUORICINO and CUORE double beta decay experiments

After an introduction on the various experimental techniques to be adopted in searches for double beta decay, the new approach based on the use of cryogenic low temperature detectors is described. The present results are reported on the limit for neutrinoless double beta decay of 130Te obtained with the large bolometric detector CUORICINO. This setup consists of 44 cubic crystals of natural TeO...

Se p 20 06 Measurement of double beta decay of 100 Mo to excited states in the NEMO 3 experiment

The double beta decay of 100Mo to the 01 and 2 + 1 excited states of 100Ru is studied using the NEMO 3 data. After the analysis of 8024 h of data the half-life for the two-neutrino double beta decay of 100Mo to the excited 01 state is measured to be T (2ν) 1/2 = [5.7 +1.3 −0.9(stat)±0.8(syst)]·10 y. The signal-to-background ratio is equal to 3. Information about energy and angular distributions...
